IELTS Academic
Designed primarily for people applying for higher education or certain professional registration pathways.
Prepare for IELTS with structured practice in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Global English Training Centre in Pattom can help you build a preparation plan around your current English level, target band score and learning needs.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses English-language ability for people who need to study, work or meet language requirements in an English-speaking environment. Preparation usually covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
IELTS has two main test types: Academic and General Training. The right test depends on the requirements of the university, employer, professional body or immigration authority receiving your result.

Choose the IELTS test that matches your study, career or migration goals. The key differences are in Reading and Writing; Listening and Speaking use the same test format.
Designed primarily for people applying for higher education or certain professional registration pathways.
Designed primarily for migration, workplace contexts and some study or training below degree level.
| Test component | IELTS Academic | IELTS General Training | Official timing |

| Listening | Four recordings covering everyday, social and educational contexts; 40 questions. | The same recordings, question types and test format as Academic. | About 30 minutesPaper test: 10 extra minutes to transfer answers. Computer test: answer-entry time is included. |
| Reading | Three sections with academic-style texts and more complex arguments or ideas; 40 questions. | Texts cover everyday life, workplace contexts and general-interest topics; 40 questions. | 60 minutesNo extra answer-transfer time |
| Writing · Task 1 | Describe, summarise or explain visual information, such as a chart, graph, map or process. | Write a letter for a specific purpose and reader, using an appropriate tone. | Within 60 minutesSuggested time: about 20 minutes |
| Writing · Task 2 | Write an essay responding to a question, issue or point of view. | Write an essay responding to a question, issue or point of view. | Within 60 minutesSuggested time: about 40 minutes · carries more weight |
| Speaking | Three-part interview: familiar topics, an individual long turn, and a discussion. | The same three-part speaking interview format as Academic. | 11–14 minutes |
| Total test duration | The four skills are assessed in both test types. Listening and Speaking are the same; Reading and Writing tasks differ. | About 2 hr 45 min | |
Test delivery and Speaking schedules can vary. Confirm the accepted IELTS type, required band score and current arrangements with the university, employer, professional body or immigration authority receiving your results.
Both tests assess English proficiency, but their task formats, speaking experience, scoring systems and test duration differ. Compare the options before choosing the test that fits your strengths and your application requirements.
If you are comfortable speaking to a computer and responding to varied, timed task types, PTE Academic may suit you. If you prefer a live speaking interview and more familiar task formats, IELTS may feel more comfortable. Neither test is automatically easier for everyone.
| Key difference | IELTS | PTE Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | IELTS Academic is commonly used for higher education and some professional registration. IELTS General Training serves certain migration, work and non-degree study pathways. | Designed for academic English assessment and accepted by many universities and selected work or migration pathways, depending on the destination and application. |
| Test format | Listening, Reading and Writing are completed in a test session; Speaking is a live interview with an examiner, scheduled according to test arrangements. | Computer-delivered test taken at a test centre, using a headset and microphone. Speaking responses are recorded. |
| Listening | Listen to recordings and answer a range of question types. The Listening test takes about 30 minutes. | Listen to recordings and complete several task types. Listening is integrated into the computer-based test. |
| Reading | Read passages and locate, interpret or compare information. Academic and General Training use different reading materials. | Read academic texts and complete computer-based tasks, including different selection and fill-in-the-blank formats. |
| Writing | Two tasks in 60 minutes. Academic Task 1 involves visual information; General Training Task 1 is a letter. Task 2 is an essay. | Computer-based tasks include writing and integrated tasks that combine skills, such as summarising written information. |
| Speaking | A live, three-part interview with an examiner, usually lasting 11–14 minutes. | Speak into a microphone and record responses to timed prompts. There is no live examiner interview. |
| Scoring | Band scores from 0 to 9, including individual skill scores and an overall band. | Scores from 10 to 90, with an overall score and communicative skill scores. |
| Approximate duration | About 2 hours 45 minutes for the four skills. | About 2 hours for PTE Academic. |
| Results | Result timing depends on the test delivery method and test centre. Check the current official arrangements when booking. | Results are typically available within 48 hours, though timing can vary. |
| Which may feel easier? | You may prefer IELTS if you communicate better in a live interview and are comfortable developing written responses in the IELTS format. | You may prefer PTE if you are comfortable working on a computer, speaking into a microphone and handling integrated, tightly timed tasks. |
There is no universally easier test, and similar-looking scores are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm the exact test version and minimum score accepted by your university, employer, professional regulator or immigration authority. IELTS General Training and PTE Academic are not interchangeable for every pathway; PTE Core is a different test used for specific purposes.

Build a repeatable method for each paper. The strategies below explain what to do before, during and after a task, what to watch out for, and how to practise deliberately. Academic and General Training share Listening and Speaking; Reading and Writing task types differ.
Practise one strategy at a time, review the evidence behind each answer, and keep an error log. When a mistake repeats, practise the underlying skill—not just another test.
Skill 01 · 30 minutesFollow the meaning, not just the words. The recording moves forward, so preparation and focused attention matter.
Getting stuck on one missed answer. Move on and keep listening for the next item.
After a practice recording, replay the difficult section and write down the clue or paraphrase that supports the correct answer.
Skill 02 · 60 minutesFind evidence efficiently. You do not need to understand every word before answering a question.
Using outside knowledge or spending too long on a single question. Base answers on the passage.
For every wrong answer, identify the exact line that proves the right answer—or shows that the information is not given.
Skill 03 · 60 minutesAnswer the exact task with a clear structure. Task fulfilment and organisation matter as much as ambitious vocabulary.
Memorised essays, irrelevant examples and complicated words used inaccurately. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
Write a short plan before each timed task. After finishing, highlight the sentence that answers each part of the prompt.
Skill 04 · 11–14 minutesAim for natural, connected communication. Develop your ideas clearly rather than trying to sound memorised.
Reciting a prepared script, forcing unfamiliar vocabulary or pausing so long to search for a perfect phrase that the idea is lost.
Record a response, listen back and review relevance, organisation, pace, clarity and repeated words. Repeat once with one specific improvement.
Your target band needs a strategy—not guesswork. Knowing English is not the same as knowing how to demonstrate your skills in an exam. Our structured IELTS preparation helps you identify strengths and gaps, practise all four skills, learn effective test strategies and track progress towards your target band score.
First, we clarify whether you need IELTS Academic or General Training, the band score you are aiming for, and when you plan to take the test. These details help us set realistic priorities and build a preparation plan around your purpose and timeline.
We review your current English level, including vocabulary, grammar, fluency, comprehension and writing. If important foundations need strengthening, we may recommend bridging lessons before intensive exam-strategy work. A stronger language foundation is essential; strategies alone cannot make up for significant skill gaps.
We begin with receptive skills—Listening and Reading—before focusing on productive skills—Writing and Speaking, while adapting the sequence to your needs. Practice helps us spot recurring errors, timing difficulties and challenging question types. We then plan targeted correction, skill development and follow-up exercises for you to complete.
We review Writing and Speaking responses against the relevant IELTS assessment criteria and band descriptors, including task fulfilment, organisation, vocabulary, grammar and—for Speaking—pronunciation and fluency. Feedback explains which criteria need work and what to practise next. Higher bands depend on meeting the assessment criteria consistently, not simply using complicated words.
After the core skills have been practised and reviewed, we introduce timed tasks and full-length mock tests when appropriate. These sessions help assess pacing and current readiness, reveal remaining gaps and guide the next stage of preparation. Mock-test results are useful indicators, not guarantees or exact predictions of your official IELTS score.
Once you have practised the skills, mock tests help you see how effectively you can apply them under test-like conditions. Every mock should lead to a clear review: what went wrong, why it happened and what to practise next.
We use two types of mock practice: skill-specific tests and full-length tests. Skill-specific mocks are introduced as you learn each skill, helping you practise question types and timing step by step. Once you have worked through all four skills, we introduce full mocks. All mock sessions are timed.
In skill-specific mock reviews, we identify missed details, incomplete answers, weak organisation, grammar issues and time-management difficulties. We use these findings to target areas for improvement and work on them before moving to full-length mock sessions.
Full mock tests help you rehearse the timing, concentration and stamina needed for the exam. They provide a useful indication of your readiness and may help you understand your likely performance, but results can differ from the official test and cannot guarantee a particular band score.
Our Cambridge CELTA-certified trainers use your mock results and review notes to recommend the next steps. Depending on the evidence, you may need to strengthen language foundations, revisit a particular skill, practise specific question types or complete further timed work before your next full mock.
